Iron Overload in SCT: Congenital Anemias


  • IOL is an established risk factor for inferior outcome in thalassemia patients undergoing SCT
  • 3 classes of risk for morbidity were described, including:
    • hepatomegaly >2cm
    • the presence of portal fibrosis
    • OR irregular ICT history1
  • Patients with IOL not undergoing IOL reduction showed normalization of SF & LIC by 5 years post-SCT only in the lowest risk2
  • Phlebotomy info post-SCT reduced IOL & improved organ function3,4
